Making eLearning Work: Leveraging Captured Knowledge and Active Learning

 The need for on-demand, just-in-time learning continues to increase as computer software becomes more sophisticated and companies become more reluctant to invest in lengthy classroom training. Over the past few years, QAD has worked to meet these needs by incorporating streaming media with presentation material into small learning objects (QBits) that can be collected into larger course structures (collections, suites). These instructional objects have been media-based, with emphasis on the streaming presentation. More recently, we have developed models based upon a balance between streaming media and other content such as user guides and training manuals. Like QBits, these materials are based on data-driven, XML-based models and offer increased opportunity and flexibility for easy customization by QAD customers. This presentation covers these new models and how these customization features can be used to enrich the learning content.
 
 However, materials alone do not result in successful learning. Users of these materials need to be adept at learning independently from diverse knowledge sources. While some people do this easily, others do not. Understanding the skills involved in active, independent learning, and how these skills can be developed, can provide a basis for developing employee readiness for taking advantage of on-demand learning materials. The second part of this presentation discusses these issues, including strategies for developing this learning readiness.
