To boost employee performance, leading CIOs define and refine the skills necessary for IT success. META Group says business leaders should evaluate each other to better strategize, execute and innovate. If CIOs could easily identify the qualities that determine highly productive staff members, they would hire more people with those qualities. Knowledge-intensive companies are focusing on a mix of measures to enable more effective human capital accounting. Growing numbers of high-performance professionals use part-time schedules to creatively balance work/life commitments. As IT workforces continue to age, CIOs should implement strategies to leverage the emerging trend of part-time employees. IT Investment Portfolio (10/12/01) CIOs must adopt portfolio management techniques and digital planning principles, and enact cost-cutting/avoidance measures to respond to a changing business climate and demonstrate their value proposition. CIOs must ensure shared financial/e-commerce networks are properly secured and operationally robust or else risk adverse audits, regulatory fines, erosion of consumer confidence, litigation, and regulatory fines for failing to properly secure, process, and safeguard consumer data and transactions. During 2001/02, leading CIOs managing the transition to information service provider will concentrate on increasing the business perception of information dependence, while developing repeatable processes for sustaining information delivery capabilities. Even the best-laid strategies and initiatives of leading IT organizations and technology companies to remove the human component of planning, building, and running IT services are not proving effective. The leadership gap in all aspects of business, including the IT organization, will severely strain most businesses from rapid transformation. Fewer than 15% of current leaders have the competencies and ability necessary to sustain the changes necessary for competitive positioning. Many infrastructure requirements of system-to-system (S2S) business-to-business (B2B) e-business will be dictated by business partners and trading relationships. CIOs are increasingly shouldering the burden of providing the necessary guidance and security measures to protect the enterprise from cyber threats. High-performing CIOs recognize the foundation for security begins by adopting enterprisewide security policies. In the new digital economy, companies must expedite new product time to market to sustain competitive advantage. However, with shorter and more complex product cycles, organizations must deal with a second strategic dimension: time to knowledge. To deepen business-to-consumer (B2C) relationships, organizations must lead customers from a simple browsing experience (gaining their time), to more interested investigation (gaining their attention), to a durable relationship (gaining their trust).
